The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam secured victories in both the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies on Thursday, emerging triumphant in the first electoral test for Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay since taking office. Election officials confirmed the results after completing all rounds of counting for the by-elections held on October 6.

These contests gained immense political significance as a referendum on the administration's initial months in power. The bypolls were necessitated after Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama, who initially won the Madurantakam and Dharapuram seats as AIADMK candidates during the 2026 Assembly elections, resigned from their legislative positions to join the ruling party.

During the early stages of counting, opposition candidates mounted strong challenges, with AIADMK nominees holding initial leads in Dharapuram before vote shares shifted. As counting progressed through multiple rounds, the ruling party candidates consolidated their positions across both reserved constituencies.

In Madurantakam, Maragatham Kumaravel secured 74,048 votes to defeat DMK nominee I. Paranthamen, who finished with 54,008 votes. AIADMK candidate S. Kanitha Sampath finished third, polling 47,450 votes. Meanwhile, in Dharapuram, P. Sathyabama established a decisive margin after 23 rounds of counting, defeating the DMK contender by 9,471 votes.

Reacting to the outcome, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay issued a statement on X characterizing the dual victory as a mandate for the people and political decorum. He maintained that the electoral success was achieved without financial inducements or distribution of money to voters.

Opposition leaders voiced sharp criticisms regarding the campaign conduct. Chief Minister MK Stalin alleged that the ruling establishment utilized governmental authority, administrative machinery, and the police force to tilt the contest. He also critiqued the campaign methods employed by the TVK leadership during the four-day buildup in the constituencies.

With these results finalized, the administrative machinery prepares for upcoming local body elections and the broader political realignment across the state. The outcomes establish a firm initial footprint for the newly formed regional formation against traditional heavyweights like the DMK and AIADMK.
