Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw formally flagged off the inaugural Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper Express from the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal in Bengaluru on November 1, launching a high-speed overnight connection between the two economic hubs.

Operating with a 16-coach rake, the newly introduced service covers the 1,113-kilometre route in approximately 16 hours, drastically reducing travel time compared to existing express trains that typically require upwards of 22 hours. Regular commercial operations are scheduled to commence on November 3 from Bengaluru and November 2 from Mumbai.

Addressing the gathering at the terminal, the minister stated that the premium connection bridges India's primary technology and startup centre with its financial capital. He added that the routing brings modern rail infrastructure to several areas in northern Karnataka that previously lacked high-tier passenger services.

The 16-coach trainset operates six days a week. It departs from Bengaluru every day except Mondays, while the return service from Mumbai stays off tracks on Tuesdays. The schedule includes halts at Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune, and Kalyan.

Designed for long-distance overnight travel, the rake configuration includes First AC, AC Two-Tier, and AC Three-Tier accommodations. Passenger amenities feature cushioned berths, integrated reading lights, mobile charging sockets, automated exterior doors, touch-free bio-vacuum toilets, and GPS-enabled passenger information boards. First AC coaches are additionally equipped with hot-water shower facilities. Security arrangements comprise onboard closed-circuit television cameras, fire detection mechanisms, and emergency talk-back units.

Union ministers Pralhad Joshi, H.D. Kumaraswamy, Shobha Karandlaje, and V. Somanna attended the launch ceremony alongside senior railway officials.

Looking ahead, the administration announced plans to flag off a separate Vande Bharat sleeper service between Bengaluru and Mangaluru in the coming weeks. Further infrastructure expansions involving high-speed rail corridors connecting southern economic nodes are currently under review.
