Lyca Productions and director S Shankar have officially confirmed the revival of Indian 3, ending months of speculation regarding the future of the high-profile action franchise. The announcement on Thursday included promotional material bearing the tagline 'War Mode' alongside the declaration that the lead character Senapathy is returning.
The formal confirmation arrives nearly two years after the theatrical release of Indian 2 in July 2024, which experienced an underwhelming commercial response at the box office. That performance initially cast doubt on whether the third installment would proceed, leading to a prolonged period of silence from the studio and creative principals.
Production sources confirmed that a substantial portion of Indian 3 was filmed concurrently with the second installment. With the studio signaling a restart, technical teams have commenced active post-production work to finalize the pending portions of the feature.
Kamal Haasan reprises his role as the vigilante Senapathy, a character he originated in the 1996 blockbuster Indian. Beyond the contemporary narrative arc, the upcoming film will function partially as a prequel by exploring the pre-independence history of Senapathy's father, Veerasekaran Balram, with Kamal Haasan essaying both roles.
The supporting cast features returning actors from the previous chapter, including Siddharth, Kajal Aggarwal, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha, and SJ Suryah. Kajal Aggarwal's inclusion incorporates previously filmed sequences that were omitted from the final cut of the second film.
On the technical front, Anirudh Ravichander handles the musical score, Ravi Varman oversees cinematography, and Muthuraj Thangavel manages production design. The project is backed by Subaskaran and GKM Tamil Kumaran under the Lyca Productions banner.
With post-production underway, the studio is expected to announce specific timelines for completion and theatrical distribution in the coming weeks. The team aims to position the feature as a major continuation of one of Tamil cinema's most prominent vigilante narratives.
