Residents across the national capital region experienced sudden shaking late Tuesday night as a moderate earthquake struck northern India. The tremors, which prompted people to rush out of their homes into streets and open spaces, were triggered by a seismic event centered in the hilly terrains of Uttarakhand.
Data released by the National Centre for Seismology recorded the magnitude of the late-night earthquake at 4.9 on the Richter scale. Seismological monitoring teams noted that the tremor struck at approximately 10:23 pm Indian Standard Time, catching many residents off guard as buildings swayed briefly across urban pockets.
The epicenter of the underground disturbance was pinpointed in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, situated at a depth of 13 kilometers. Officials specified the exact geographical coordinates of the focus point at latitude 30.103° North and longitude 79.561° East, roughly 50 kilometers south of Joshimath.
Aside from the National Capital Region, the sudden ground movement was felt across multiple parts of northern India, including neighboring areas in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Social media platforms quickly flooded with user posts from various localities documenting the unexpected shaking and shared concerns.
Local authorities and disaster management cells immediately initiated ground checks across different municipal zones to evaluate potential fallout. Preliminary field assessments from police and district administrations indicated no immediate reports of structural damage, loss of life, or injuries resulting from the seismic activity.
Emergency response teams remain on high alert while monitoring potential aftershocks following the occurrence. Officials have advised citizens to stay calm, exercise caution, and follow safety protocols in the event of subsequent minor adjustments in the earth's crust.
