The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance will stage a large-scale demonstration in New Delhi on Monday, October 12, following days of escalating political tension and police clampdowns during demonstrations in the capital. Opposition leaders have finalized plans to mobilize party workers and march through central areas to register their discontent.
Trinamool Congress leadership confirmed that party chief Mamata Banerjee has cancelled her scheduled return to West Bengal and will remain in the capital to take part in the protest. The decision follows a series of detentions involving opposition figures near central Delhi, prompting a unified response from alliance partners across multiple states.
The mobilization comes in the wake of widespread protests organized against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Demonstrators and opposition legislators have raised concerns regarding procedural discrepancies and the deletion of voter entries during the revision exercise.
Alliance leaders had earlier approached the President regarding the controversy and subsequently planned to submit a formal memorandum to the Supreme Court. The opposition intends to press demands concerning electoral transparency, an end to alleged voter list discrepancies, and accountability from the poll panel leadership.
Security forces maintained a heavy deployment across key intersections in central Delhi as authorities braced for the renewed demonstrations. Police had previously erected heavy barricades and restricted public movement near Jantar Mantar and surrounding avenues, leading to friction between security personnel and political workers.
Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi appealed to citizens and political workers to join the march, framing the mobilization around institutional integrity. Parliamentarians belonging to constituent parties have been instructed to stay back in New Delhi to participate in the scheduled events.
Ruling party representatives have dismissed the allegations leveled against the election machinery, maintaining that the poll panel functions independently within constitutional boundaries. Political observers note that the joint opposition action points to a concerted strategy to sustain pressure on federal authorities as electoral debates intensify across states.
