A first-year BTech student at the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Ranchi, was found dead inside his hostel room on the Khelgaon premises late Saturday night, prompting local police to initiate a formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death.

The tragedy has brought intense scrutiny to campus welfare standards and academic pressure points in premier technical institutions, leading to widespread student demonstrations concerning administrative accountability and medical emergency protocols.

According to district police officials, the matter came to light around 11:30 PM on Saturday when peers grew anxious after the student failed to answer repeated knocks or open his door. Hostel inmates forced entry into the room and found him unresponsive, following which he was transported to a nearby private hospital where attending physicians pronounced him dead on arrival.

Investigators identified the deceased as Aditya, a 20-year-old native of Bihar's Purnia district. Ranchi Sadar Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Besra stated that preliminary assessments point toward academic stress as a possible trigger, noting that the institute's semester examinations had commenced on October 8.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ranjan confirmed that a forensic science laboratory team visited the site to collect physical evidence and record statements from roommates and peers. The body was subsequently transferred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences for a post-mortem examination, while the student's family was notified to travel to Ranchi.

The discovery of the body sparked immediate agitation among students, who gathered outside administration blocks and briefly blocked the Khelgaon-Tatisilwai road on Sunday before dispersing the blockade voluntarily. Protesters raised grievances regarding campus amenities, alleging that emergency transport lacked functional driver support and oxygen equipment during the crisis.

Institute Director Rajiv Srivastav visited the campus to address the gathering and interact with students, while administration representatives stated they are extending full cooperation to the district administration and police inquiry. Meanwhile, national child and human rights bodies have taken cognisance of the developments to review administrative responses and medical infrastructure availability on campus.

Police authorities indicated that further proceedings will depend on the final autopsy findings and the completion of statements from individuals residing in the hostel block.
