Hundreds of heritage enthusiasts, stamp collectors and residents formed serpentine queues outside the Bengaluru General Post Office on Ambedkar Veedhi over the weekend, responding to the release of the Karnataka Philately Passport. The heavy turnout led to the rapid exhaustion of physical tokens issued by postal authorities.

The strong public response highlights a resurgence of interest in traditional postal collectibles and heritage tourism across the state. Priced at ₹600, the booklet functions as both a travel diary and a collector item, allowing individuals to log visits to historical, cultural and tourist destinations by acquiring distinctive postal cancellations.

Swati Pandey, Chief Postmaster General of the Karnataka Postal Circle, stated that the distribution was conducted strictly on a first-come, first-served basis through physical tokens rather than online bookings. The department allocated 1,500 passports for the opening day at the Bengaluru GPO, with an additional 2,000 copies slated for distribution on Sunday under regulated timings.

Queues began forming outside the premises hours before the counters opened, with applicants waiting along the street to secure their copies. Across the state, the Karnataka Postal Circle rolled out a total of 8,000 passports during the weekend drive, extending the retail exercise beyond Bengaluru to head post offices in Mysuru, Mangaluru, and Belagavi.

Officials noted that the initiative coincides with ongoing postal events, aiming to encourage younger demographics to engage with postal history and physical correspondence. Alongside the passport counters, the GPO set up special zones including personalized stamp stations and letter-writing desks.

Postal authorities have acknowledged the supply shortfall driven by the high demand and indicated that future restocking exercises are under consideration for enthusiasts who missed out during the weekend release.
