Domestic airfares originating from Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru have registered sharp upward revisions ahead of the peak festive and year-end travel season, catching many passengers unawares. Round-trip tickets on prominent sectors such as the Bengaluru-Delhi and Bengaluru-Mumbai routes have crossed ₹20,000 for peak travel dates, reflecting a substantial increase compared to previous years.
This pricing spike matters deeply to thousands of working professionals, students, and families residing in Karnataka’s capital who rely on air travel to return to their hometowns for Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath Puja. With alternative long-distance train berths running heavily waitlisted weeks in advance, the steep cost of flying places a severe strain on household budgets during the festive period.
Aviation industry data indicates that domestic airfares across several major Indian corridors have climbed by 37 to 68 per cent compared to the same period last year. While passenger traffic has surged, airlines have scheduled roughly 5 per cent fewer domestic flight frequencies for the October-December quarter, even as total seat capacity dipped by a marginal 1.2 per cent by deploying larger aircraft on select trunk routes.
Carriers attribute the constrained departure schedules and elevated ticket costs to mounting operational overheads. Aviation turbine fuel prices have witnessed consecutive upward revisions over recent months, driven by volatile global crude oil markets influenced by West Asian geopolitical tensions. Major domestic carriers, including IndiGo and the Air India group, recently instituted hikes to their distance-based fuel surcharges, further raising the baseline cost of air travel.
Travel agencies and booking platforms in Bengaluru report that dynamic pricing algorithms are kicking in much earlier than usual as available inventory dwindles on high-density sectors like Patna, Kolkata, and Delhi. While non-peak flights continue to offer standard fares, booking a last-minute seat for travel immediately preceding festival dates has become cost-prohibitive.
Industry analysts expect fares to remain elevated through the end of the year as holiday demand sustains momentum. Consumer advocacy groups have renewed calls for regulatory oversight on dynamic airline pricing during festive windows, pointing to the financial burden placed on flyers when alternative transport options are exhausted. In the interim, travel operators advise passengers to explore flexible dates or alternative routing to mitigate ticket expenses.
