A delegation of fifteen women parliamentarians from the Bharatiya Janata Party met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday to seek the immediate suspension of Congress Lok Sabha member Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. The petition follows sexual harassment allegations leveled against the legislator by female students at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The high-level political intervention escalates the ongoing confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition over accountability in academic institutions. The controversy centers on Mr. Akoijam, who represented Inner Manipur in Parliament and formerly served as a professor at the university's Centre for the Study of Social Systems.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, BJP Mahila Morcha president Roop Kumari Choudhary stated that the memorandum submitted to the President urged formal steps to remove the legislator from the Lower House. The delegation also pressed for comprehensive legal protection for the complainants involved in the inquiry.

University authorities dismissed Mr. Akoijam from his teaching position last week following findings by the institution's internal committee. The panel investigated written grievances submitted by eleven female students regarding professional misconduct. Subsequently, the Delhi Police registered a formal First Information Report based on a complaint lodged by the campus security administration.

The political fallout from the university proceedings has triggered widespread protests across the national capital and other regions. Members of the ruling party's women's wing staged demonstrations near opposition headquarters, criticizing senior Congress figures for maintaining silence on the matter despite stated commitments to gender justice.

Mr. Akoijam has disputed the validity of the internal findings and questioned the procedural fairness of the university inquiry. Representatives from the opposition camp have yet to issue a detailed formal response to the presidential petition filed by the governing party legislators.

Ms. Choudhary told media personnel that President Murmu assured the delegation that authorities would examine the grievances and ensure appropriate follow-up actions. Legal proceedings and police inquiries into the matter remain active.
