The Bharatiya Janata Party launched a severe counterattack on Wednesday against Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of aligning with fringe factions to instigate civil unrest in the national capital. The remarks came as opposition lawmakers pressed ahead with their agitation demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over electoral roll revisions.
Addressing a public gathering during the Seva Sankalp Yatra in Varanasi, BJP national president Nitin Nabin asserted that the opposition leadership was fostering an atmosphere of chaos by cooperating with anti-social groups. He stated that the electorate would reject attempts to disrupt public order and defended the Election Commission's ongoing Special Intensive Revision of voter lists against opposition criticism.
Opposition parliamentarians had earlier attempted to march toward Jantar Mantar, leading to dramatic confrontations with security forces and subsequent temporary detentions. The demonstrations marked the second consecutive day of protests by the INDIA bloc, which has vowed to maintain pressure on election authorities regarding voter verification protocols.
During Wednesday's demonstrations, police detained multiple opposition MPs before releasing them later in the day. Amid the tense stand-off near security barricades, Rahul Gandhi was seen interacting with police personnel on duty, offering them water bottles and acknowledging their professional responsibilities while remaining firm on the political demands of the bloc.
Senior ruling party figures intensified their criticism alongside the party chief. Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan joined the censure, condemning the tactics employed by opposition figures during recent demonstrations. The ruling alliance maintained that questioning the constitutional authority of the poll panel stems from an unwillingness to accept electoral accountability.
Rejecting the government stance, Rahul Gandhi declared that the agitation would persist until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar steps down from his post. Opposition leaders indicated plans for further demonstrations in the capital to escalate their campaign against the poll watchdog's administrative procedures.
