Global technology major Apple has officially introduced Apple Pay in India, marking the company's entry into one of the world's most prominent digital payment landscapes. The rollout arrived in collaboration with Axis Bank, establishing the private lender as the primary launch partner for the platform's initial deployment in the country. Under this partnership, eligible customers holding Axis Bank credit cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks can now integrate their cards into the Apple Wallet application.
According to Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, the introduction is tailored to India's dynamic and digitally savvy consumer base. She noted that the service aims to provide a secure and private alternative for everyday purchases, enabling users to complete transactions without sharing physical card details. Axis Bank Managing Director and CEO Amitabh Chaudhry also highlighted that the collaboration aligns with the vision of fostering a sophisticated and interconnected digital financial ecosystem.
At the time of its release, Apple Pay is supported on multiple device categories including the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, with dedicated support for Mac computers expected to arrive soon. Security is managed through device-level mechanisms such as Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode, eliminating the need to enter a physical card PIN or a one-time password during checkout. Furthermore, the platform utilizes tokenized, device-specific numbers rather than transmitting actual card digits to merchants.
For in-store checkouts, users can utilize near-field communication (NFC) at a variety of participating merchants across the nation. Launch partners supporting the service include popular consumer brands and platforms such as Blinkit, Chaayos, Comet, Croma, Interflora, Ixigo, Le15 Patisserie, Reliance retail brands, Tata 1mg, and Zomato. Additionally, Apple has established integration agreements with multiple payment service providers—including Cashfree, JusPay, Mswipe, Paytm, PayU, Pine Labs, Razorpay, and Worldline—to expand acceptance across wider merchant networks.
Despite the nationwide rollout, the initial phase features notable limitations compared to mature markets or domestic alternatives. The service currently does not support India’s widespread Unified Payments Interface (UPI) or homegrown RuPay cards, keeping its focus strictly on eligible credit card networks. Furthermore, major card issuers such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and SBI Card are yet to join the platform as commercial negotiations continue, leaving Axis Bank as the sole initial issuer.
Industry analysts note that while Apple Pay enters a market heavily dominated by UPI transactions and existing Android-based tap-and-pay solutions, its introduction provides a native convenience layer for loyal Apple ecosystem users. As discussions progress with other leading private lenders and payment networks, broader adoption and expanded bank integrations are anticipated in the future.
