Amazon and Tata Motors have announced a joint initiative to deploy 3,000 electric trucks across India's transportation and logistics network over the next three years. The rollout represents the largest commercial electric vehicle deployment planned by an e-commerce enterprise in the country.

The agreement marks an expansion of clean-energy fleet operations beyond urban last-mile deliveries into middle-mile freight transportation. By targeting long-haul corridors and inter-city shipping routes, the program addresses heavy emissions segments within national supply chains.

The initial phase of the deployment commenced in New Delhi with the flagging off of the first batch of Tata Ultra E.7 electric trucks. Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy officiated the launch alongside senior corporate executives from both companies.

Under the structural framework of the agreement, Tata Motors will manufacture and supply the commercial vehicles, while Amazon's independent carrier partners will hold ownership and manage daily operations. The vehicle model utilized for the initial rollout features a 96 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and an integrated e-axle, providing a operational range of up to 130 kilometres per charge.

Following the launch in the capital, the network will expand significantly along the 2,800-kilometre corridor connecting Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai via National Highway 48. This arterial route spans seven states and connects multiple major e-commerce regional fulfillment centers.

Supporting infrastructure for the fleet is being developed in tandem with charging network providers, including Yahhvi, which has established dedicated charging yards for the retail platform. Tata Motors will provide ongoing technical support, servicing and operational assistance to maintain vehicle uptime.

Rajesh Kaul, vice president and business head for trucks at Tata Motors, stated that commercial electric mobility in India has transitioned beyond initial pilot phases into broad operational adoption. The initiative aligns with national clean energy targets and federal vehicle incentive programs designed to lower transport emissions.

Amazon currently operates a fleet exceeding 15,000 electric vehicles across more than 500 cities in the country. The integration of heavy electric trucks represents the next operational step toward achieving corporate net-zero carbon goals.
